Sylvie Prepetit, BSPH

Sylvie Prepetit is a second-year Master of Public Health candidate at Emory University, Rollins School of Public Health, concentrating in Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences with a Certificate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Ms. Prepetit obtained her Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a minor in Leadership and Management at American University.

Her academic pursuits are complemented by her experience as a Research Assistant at the Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center in Atlanta, where she collaborates with program directors and leaders to support multidisciplinary research on tuberculosis. Her role involves data cleaning, coordinating event planning, driving social media engagement strategies, and crafting communication strategies to convey complex research concepts to diverse audiences. Professionally, Ms. Prepetit has made significant contributions through various roles. As a Policy and Communications Intern at the Eldercare Workforce Alliance in Washington, DC, she drafted and edited advocacy communications, conducted legislative research, and organized webinars for Older Americans Mental Health Month. She also served as a consultant for Capital Clubhouse, where she developed a health promotion curriculum and conducted scientific research to provide evidence-based recommendations.

Ms. Prepetit has a distinguished record of leadership and community service. As a Division I student-athlete in women’s soccer, she earned Academic Honors for four consecutive years and served as team captain, demonstrating her ability to inspire and lead both on and off the field. Ms. Prepetit’s unique background as a student-athlete has cultivated a strong work ethic, emerging not only as a tenacious competitor but also as a consummate scholar, adept at striking a harmonious balance between her diverse responsibilities. Outside of athletics, she volunteered with Grassroots Health, instructing sexual health curricula in DC public charter schools leading a team to deliver effective health education. As the Social Justice Branch Leader for the American University Student Athlete Advisory Committee, she orchestrated events in collaboration with the athletic department and led impactful social justice initiatives. Additionally, she co-founded the American University Black Athlete Coalition, providing a space for Black student-athletes to connect and share experiences.

Sylvie is a 2024 Dr. James A. Ferguson RISE Fellow at the Rollins School of Public Health, under the mentorship of Dr. Sarita Shah. Ms. Prepetit is working on a project focused on characterizing the emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment in South Africa. Through this fellowship, she will gain valuable experience in public health research, data analysis, and collaborating with international teams.

Ms. Prepetit’s professional interests lie in the intersection of behavioral and social sciences and infectious disease. Her passion for public health is driven by her desire to address health disparities, particularly among Black women. She hopes to pursue a Ph.D. to deepen her knowledge in epidemiology with the goal of contributing to the field of public health through research, practice, and advocacy.
